John Cafaro

Growing up in California John was drawn to Mexico from a young age. Dreams became reality when he left Santa Fe in late 2010 to drive south for 6 months photographing and traveling throughout Mexico and Central America. However it was a cenote tour at Dos Ojos that changed his life. The silent, timeless beauty seen through the crystalline blue waters made John’s next move clear. After selling the studio lights for underwater lights John moved to Thailand to start his training. John spent 4 years building technical and overhead diving and teaching experience while continuing further diver training on the Megaladon, and JJ CCRs.

It was a small print that fell out of his first issue of the GUE publication Quest that brought instant clarity. An iconic JP Bresser image of a diver in Ressel cave made John realize what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Find a way to go cave diving every day and share his vision of it with others.

The move to Mexico was unquestionable, John is now honored to call the Riviera Maya home. Big city, beach sometimes surf and miles of caves! The last 2 years he has been training with Protec and John brings his passion for photography and creative lighting to his guiding, teaching and exploring the underground rivers of the Yucatan.

Looking to the future John is excited to further his cave diving career with the mentorship of Protec. He hopes to change your life with one of his stunning cave photographs and through teaching you the proper techniques, procedures and awareness to fully appreciate and preserve these beautiful and essential underground splendors.

In addition to teaching, John offers cave photo shoots and photography workshops for the photographer interested in developing their creative eye.
