Skanda is a passionate cave guide from Melbourne, Australia. Growing up he spent lots of time at the beach, swimming and snorkelling. Despite loving being in and around the water, he never considered SCUBA diving until a trip traveling around South East Asia. In Thailand, some friends suggested giving diving a go, and after an Open Water Course he was hooked. The initial plan to do the course then continue traveling went out the window and he completed his Advanced Open Water course as well.
When traveling overseas he continued diving, however it was not until he began diving in Melbourne that his passion for it really developed. As he became involved with a local dive club he was exposed to more advanced diving, and took part in many dive trips across Australia. It was not long after a couple of dive trips through Mount Gambier (home to many of Australia’s caves) that he decided that cave diving, and the amazing cave sites, were what he is really interested in.
Skanda continued diving in Australia and South East Asia, and developed his knowledge and skills, taking more technical and cave courses. In 2014 he first came to Mexico, between jobs as a high school teacher. There he became a PADI instructor and completed his full cave course. Once he has dived the spectacular caves Mexico there was no turning back! While his work as a high school teacher took him to Taiwan – where he was able to fit in some work as an Open Water Instructor, and exploring the diving that Taiwan had to offer – in less than 2 years he was back in Mexico.
After finishing his teaching work in Taiwan in 2015 Skanda travelled for some months, ending in Mexico for some more cave diving. His love of the caves of the Yucatan Peninsula was renewed, and he decided to make the move to working in the dive industry full time. He returned to Melbourne for some more diving, to work at a dive store (and to collect dive gear) before moving to Tulum in January 2015.
Even when not working, Skanda is likely found underwater in one of the many cave systems around Tulum, or eating tacos from one of the local stalls.
